Gastronomic Delights and Hungarica

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
There are no other regions of the country which would connect so many of its events and festivals to
gastronomy.

It is believed that lands, people and cultures cannot be known without our getting acquainted with their food and drinks. The sun ripens many sorts of Hungarica here, such as the apricots, from which they make the Hungarian pálinka (brandy). The most important spice of a Hungarian kitchen is the paprika, which cannot be left out of any stew, fish soup, or goulash. Neither can the other staple of this region, the onions of Makó.

Please join us and taste our specialities.

Open-Air Festival of Szeged

22 May – 22 August 2010

Tempting titles at the Open-Air Festival of Szeged

The Open-Air Festival of Szeged offers thrilling programmes in 2010 again.
My Fair Lady, the play balancing between the genres of operetta and musical
opens the season, followed by a „dance-story” of Dózsa. We can also see
Bizet’s amazing opera, Carmen, about the love of the fiery gipsy girl;
the best-known play about the hippies, the Hair, an Opera-Operetta Gala
and the Super-Concert of Délmagyarország.

The genuine festival-feeling fills the hot summer nights of Szeged,
when lovers of the theatre capture the city waiting for the light
of the stage to be turned on.

The greatest open-air theatre of Hungary is located in the enchanting
Dóm Square which is often compared to the Saint Mark Square in Venice.
Colourful programmes ensure quality entertainment. The organisers find
it very important to extend cultural services year by year,
that is why the programmes offered by the REÖK and the
Open-Air Festival are strongly connected.

34th Musical Days of Békés-Tarhos

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
21 June – 04 July 2010

The festival organised every summer ever
since 1976 has its roots in 1946.
That was when the Singing School of Tarhos was established.

The former school received the Hungarian Heritage Award in
2007 by means of which the jury acknowledged the values of
music pedagogy founded by György Gulyás.
Presenting the works of Hungarian composers among European
ones has always been a major priority when organising the
concerts of this festival of classical music.
Since the foundation of the festival BÉTAZEN three decades
ago, our concept was built around the Kodály-heritage since
the Kodály-method was taught for the first time in Tardos.
The concept of the programme evolved more than twenty years
ago and is divided into three main trends:
-concerts and courses
-camps and trainings
-other supplementary and accompanying programmes.

The festival has been awarded with the honourable title of
“Good Record of Artistic Festival”.

Hírös Week Festival

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
16-22 August 2010

The aim of the festival is the same as it was in 1934, “to allow
Kecskemét to show itself to the world”, by extending the profile of
the local cultural, horticultural and gastronomic exhibitions. Within
the frames of the traditional programme schedule a pram parade, a
children’s march and the programme of several artistic youth groups
welcome the visitors of the festival on the first day.

Providing an important role to the programmes of the delegations of our
sister towns has always been a priority in the city policy of Kecskemét.

The Main Square gives home to the Wine-Town with wine shows, the Town
of Regional Settlements with agricultural and gastronomic samples from
the region, the Town of Artisans with excellent merchandise and the
formal courtyard of the City Hall features a flower show.

Pop and rock bands, folk singers, professional and amateur dance groups
will entertain the visitors on the stage set up on the Main Square,
and the Day of the Non-Profit Organisations of Kecskemét provides
entertaining programmes throughout the day.

The celebration of St. Stephan is connected to the series of events:
after the traditional celebration, the evening finishes with great
performances on the stage and a spectacular firework display.

On the last day of the Hírös Week, the Main Square turns into a huge
playground: puppet shows and artisan workshops will be awaiting the
children.

3-17 November 2010

The Opera Competition and Festival will be organised for the third time
in 2010. With regards to its basic concepts and structure it exceeds
traditional singing competitions since the person winning this
competition is not necessarily the young opera-singer with the best
vocal skills and with the greatest singing ability but the one who can
alloy all professional demands of the profession: opera-singing,
movement and acting.

In order to evaluate the complex artistic achievement of the singers,
the jury and the audience have to see them in different roles in
numerous plays. Therefore, the Opera Competition puts five different
plays on stage every year in the opera houses of five countries, all
of which are presented at the festival closing the competition where
not only the contesting main characters but the productions themselves
are competing for the grand prize.

Our partner opera houses in 2010 are:
Csokonai Theatre, Debrecen,
Josef Kajetán Tyl Theatre, Pilzen (Check Republic),
Cracow Opera House, Cracow (Poland),
Den Nye Opera, Bergen (Norway),
Dicapo Opera, New York
(USA).

Szeged National Theatre
Szeged, Vaszy Viktor Square 1.
