Szeged Dome – one of Hungary’s seven wonders

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
The great flood of the Tisza in 1879 virtually swept Szeged off the map. The city’s inhabitants then made a vow that if they succeed in rebuilding the city, they would erect a large church in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Thus, the Church of the Vow, or as more widely known, the Szeged Dome, was built. It is the only cathedral built in the 20th century in Hungary and has one of the largest church organs in Europe. It also boasts the second largest church bell in the country, which is called the Bell of the Heroes. It weighs almost 860 kilograms and is rung only seven times a year. The façade of the cathedral, with its majestic size, also becomes a magnificent backdrop for the performances presented here during the Szeged Open- Air Festival. The cultural event takes place on the cathedral square and is organized annually.

Szeged boasts a history of over a hundred years as a
city of baths. Five bath complexes in this city cater to
the needs of visitors who desire to engage in therapy,
sports and relaxation.

The décor of the Anna Health‑, Thermal- and Pleasure Spa evokes the beauty of the past, and, along with the Újszeged Health- and Thermal Baths, welcomes visitors seeking cure and therapy. Liget Bath is one of the largest active pleasure baths of the region, whereas Shore Bath, located in its neighborhood, was established on the sandy beaches of the Tisza and shares a common area with the camp site. Enthusiasts of natural waters can visit Sziksósfürdő, located in a woodsy, green area 12 kilometres from Szeged, with its sodic-bottomed bathing lake, its children’s pools and rowing lake.

Paprika, basic spice of the Hungarian kitchen

Bookmark and Share  Print article  Send link
Production of paprika spread in the region in the middle of the 16th century, but never achieved such a successful career anywhere that it has in Hungary.

Many important factors contributed to the paprika of Szeged and Kalocsa becoming a hungaricum. The excellent soil, the high number of sunny hours, scrupulous and painstaking selection and cultivation, and, naturally, centuries of experience and love of this spice have all played roles. The red paprika has earned its prestigious place both at home and throughout the world as an essential part of the world-renowned Hungarian gastronomy. Its color, flavor, aroma, and potent seasoning ability elevate it to the rank of natural enjoyment spices and make it an indispensible ingredient among our additional nationally protected, trademarked products.

The flat-heeled slippers of Szeged, embroidered with flowers, were once manufactured in 40-50 different shops throughout the city.
The decorative, floralpatterned footwear was constructed from leather and velvet so skillfully that it became known beyond the borders of Hungary as early as the 17th-18th centuries.
